Popis: Although interferon (IFN) was discovered by virtue of its antiviral effect, an activity which indeed defines it, a large body of literature now documents that IFN can also have significant effects on uninfected cells. The range of these effects is extensive; the largest number of reports deals with the ability of IFN to inhibit cell growth in culture (see reviews by Gresser and Tovey 1978; Dahl 1977 b; Baron et al. 1979; Gresser 1977; Hovanessian 1979; Ho and Armstrong 1975). Published reports describe the inhibition of growth of cells of human (see Table 1) and mouse (see Table 2) origin. In this chapter we shall limit our discussion to the effects of IFN on cells grown in culture. Such effects may be involved in the antitumor and immunomodulatory activities of IFN in vivo described in other chapters of this book.
