1. 1. Amino acid analyses of Noetia ponderosa tissue indicate an unknown peak co-chromatogramming with urea, 2-aminoethylphosphonic acid and hypotaurine standards. 2. 2. This unknown substance, isolated from N. ponderosa tissue, has been identified as hypotaurine by chemical analyses. 3. 3. Since the intracellular concentrations of hypotaurine are low (11.7% of the amino acid pool in muscle, 6.1% in gill, 6.4% in blood cells, and 16% in foot) it is not an important osmotic solute in N. ponderosa tissues. 4. 4. Taurine, the oxidation product of hypotaurine, appears to be the major osmotic solute in N. ponderosa tissues. |
