Popis: This paper summarizes a study conducted to evaluate the fidelity of structural dynamic models for the space station photovoltaic arrays and determine the effect of model fidelity on the accuracy of on-orbit loads analyses. The array blankets do not possess out-of-plane stiffness, but axial forces from negator springs restrain the movement of blankets in the lateral direction. This geometric stiffening effect allows use of quasi-linear dynamic analysis in generating the linearized component model. Physical description, finite element modeling and component model reduction of the array system are discussed. Theoretical background and physical insights of geometric stiffening are also presented through a simple beam-string model. Case study results with two critical transient loading events show that the math model and analysis process can generate accurate dynamic loads responses for the array.
