Popis: The objective of the article is to discuss the opportunity of family farming as a means to ensure sustainable local development in Brazil. In methodological terms, the research can be classified as qualitative and descriptive. For data collection, the research can be classified as bibliographic and documentary. The results indicate that family farming is an important source of job and income generation, contributes to gender equality and preservation of woods and forests. Therefore, it contributes to sustainable local development, considering employed people, the number of establishments, the management of the property, which is shared by the family and the presence of women is an incentive for the family to remain in agricultural activity. We also see that there are possibilities for family farming to expand its contribution to the sustainable local development of agribusiness production and organic agriculture. Finally, family farming represents a viable opportunity for sustainable local development.
