When the dam of a water reservoir breaks, a positive wave propagates downstream, with an increase of the depth while a negative wave propagates upstream, with a decrease of the depth. Ritter’s inviscid theory (1892) is the simplest description of the inertial flow generated by this phenomenon on a horizontal surface. It was extended to the case where turbulent friction (Dressier, 1952, Whitham, 1955) or laminar friction is present (Piau, 1995). Experimental results available fit reasonnably well with these perturbation theories. |
