The radionuclides 131I, 137Cs, and 140Ba are determined in fluid milk by multi-channel gamma spectroscopy, using a heavily shielded 4″ × 4″ sodium iodide (thallium-activated) crystal as a detector. The contribution of each of the above nuclides, and also of the naturally-occurring 40K and background, to the composite gamma spectrum is determined by means of simultaneous equations describing their mutual interferences. No sample preparation is required for the analysis. The sensitivity of the method is about 10 μμc litre , with an accuracy of about 5–10 μμc litre when the nuclides are present at levels up to about 50–100 μμc litre . At higher levels, the precision and accuracy are about 5–10%. |
