As standard and standardization of RFID currently remain a key issue in achieving the vision of RFID, the purpose of this paper is to identify strategic issues related to RFID standard and its standardization initiatives for developing countries. Several issues on RFID standards and standardization are discussed including the importance of RFID standards for global adoption, international standard initiatives, frequency and data standards, prospects of mobile RFID, cross-industry applications and the level of adoption. Harmonization of standards is suggested as the second best solution to ensure rapid adoption among various industries since RFID standardization comprises complex issues which needs to compromise both general standards and industry-specific requirements. Some strategies for developing countries focusing on key sectors or industries are also suggested to meet standardization challenges in this paper. |
