Popis: With a well-publicised effect on future success, ‘school readiness’ is a term often used, but seldom fully understood. If we are to help children begin school with the best chance of success, preconceived notions of their abilities in the run-up to the school gates needs challenging. With growing research to support the need for rich, diverse experiences throughout children's early years, this article embraces a new way of thinking, adjusting attention from the media-focused, yet factually lacking concepts of the child considered ‘ready for learning’ to one that celebrates the wide-ranging, holistic abilities of all children. Working face-to-face with families, health visitors are ideally placed to aid their understanding of preparations for effective school learning, celebrating their vital role in their child's early years in ways accessible to all.
