A borehole experiment using prompt gamma neutron activation analysis has been performed in a large sample box having a volume of 1 m3. Brine solutions having a salt concentration in the range of 0–10 wt% of sodium chloride has been used. Chlorine prompt gamma spectral response as a function of the salt concentrations have been obtained. A simulation of the above experiments has also been carried out using the MCNP4A Monte Carlo code. Comparison of the experimental spectral response versus the simulated MCNP4A data has produced excellent agreement. In view of the good benchmark data it is proposed that due to the inherent problems associated with the ordinary calibration procedures for the borehole logging tools, one could employ a combined calibration/simulation scheme to circumvent these difficulties and achieve more effective results. |
