There are two types of relief wells drilled in the industry. They are the direct intercept relief well that actually drills into the blowout well, and the geometric relief well that drills as close as possible to the blowout well. Blowout wells that have metal pipe in them can be located with ranging tools. If there is no metal in the well near the blowout formation, then ranging tools cannot be used to locate the open hole in the blowout. A geometric relief well would then be required. The direct intercept well has a very high confidence of being able to kill the blowout, whereas the odds of killing the blowout decrease with a geometric relief well depending upon the formations. |
