An efficient batch reactor design with an internal heat transfer element developed by Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation is described. Dynamic modeling of the temperature control element, based on a once through cooling scheme and steam heating, shows that very high heat transfer coefficients are attained compared to a standard jacketed reactor. A three loop cascaded control structure with a non-linear transformation and split range based on a steady state approximation of the model is proposed. In addition, a tunable reference model that adjusts to different heatup rates is described. Startup results of a 100,000 Tone/year facility show temperature regulation for several different PVC grades is well within the ±0.5 °C constraint for the entire batch including the transition from heating to cooling. |
