This paper has considered the quantitative design of a suction pressure controller for a gas recovery compressor. The controller maintains the compressor suction pressure within manufacturer’s tolerances during significant mass flow disturbances into an upstream surge vessel. In this application, the design was required before equipment purchase. The QFT design method has allowed consideration of the valve non-linearity, approximate distributed gas dynamics, valve actuator and sensor dynamics, the effect of digital implementation and the use of a feed-forward measurement of surge vessel pressure. It also provides engineering insight, enabling design improvements to be made both during the design phase and during on-line commissioning as process knowledge improves and operating experience increases. |
