Summary I will conclude by a brief summary of my recommendations on the subject of our discussion. o (1) More knowledge as to the factors making for physiological pregnancies and confinements, with practical application of that knowledge. (2) A recognition by the medical profession that the midwife is legally recognised as a properly qualified practitioner to undertake midwifery and their function is to assist and not supersede. (3) Restriction of work done by medical men in connection with maternity which is paid for by local supervising authorities to a panel of practitioners and experts selected because of their aptitude in this sphere. (4) A greater utilisation of such selected doctors in connection with ante-natal and other maternity duties, thus aiming at the policy of the B.M.A. that one doctor should be associated throughout with any medical assistance required. (5) A simplification of the rules of the C.M.B. by a substitution of more general directions defining clearly the respective spheres of the midwife and the doctor. |
