Popis: | A weight gain of 1.0 g or more on a 1-hour perineal pad-weighing test is often taken as diagnostic of urinary incontinence. Sixteen women with symptomatic vaginal discharges underwent a modified 1-hour pad-weighing test to determine how much weight gain on such a test could be attributed to this condition. The average pad-weight gain was 0.7 g (range 0.1 g–2.4 g). Three patients had pad-weight changes greater than 1.0 g. The results suggest that although the amount of pad-weight attributable to symptomatic vaginal discharge is generally small, it nonetheless may contribute significantly to pad-weight gain on perineal pad-weighing tests in some patients. If such tests are used as the sole criterion for diagnosing incontinence, some patients may run the risk of unnecessary and unwarranted treatment for a condition they do not have. |
