Popis: Six normal pregnant patients were studied in a metabolic unit under rigidly controlled metabolic balance techniques. The daily nitrogen intake was similar on 5 patients (12 to 14 Gm.) and reduced on one (6 Gm.). All patients showed a positive nitrogen balance antepartum. This positive balance was again seen in the fourth and fifth postpartum periods in all patients. The 6 patients showed individual variation in the first three balance periods post partum; however, all patients displayed a negative nitrogen balance in either the first or second period. Two thirds (200 Gm.) of retained maternal nitrogen is unaccounted for during pregnancy. It is estimated that 1.0 Gm. of protein per kilogram of body weight should be an adequate intake during pregnancy.
