Discusses using pumping light injection to increase the stimulated emission rate of a multiple quantum well (MQW) SOA, which in turn increases its saturation output power and input dynamic range. However, to avoid a large unsaturated optical gain reduction, the wavelength of the pumping light must be carefully selected at the edge of the SOA gain spectrum. This technique has been shown to effectively increase the SOA output saturation power and have been tested in a multi-gigabit wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) system. We used a light-injected MQW SOA to carry out a 100-km 1310-nm transmission system experiment in which 77 channels of 64QAM signals (equivalent to a capacity of 30 Mbit/s/spl times/77/spl ap/2.3 Gbit/s) can be transported.
