The use of geotextiles to reinforce construction on soft soils has been ongoing for decades, yet new challenges regularly arise and appropriate solutions are necessary. This chapter focuses on three discrete yet interrelated solutions for soft soil reinforcement: large-scale basal reinforcement, geotextile-encased granular columns, and geosynthetic piled embankments. Each is described and commented upon regarding design issues and performance to date and a specific project example is provided. Such projects are within the state of the practice and are capable of being designed and constructed with confidence insofar as successful long-term performance is concerned. |
