An important aspect for the acceptance of building integrated photovoltaics is the aesthetics. So far, the research in this field has been focused on realizing coloured photovoltaic modules. In this contribution, a thin film solar cell with switchable colour is presented. A gasochromic Pd/Mg film is combined with a conductive optical resonator. The gasochromic film can be switched via hydrogenation and dehydrogenation between the metallic and dielectric state, which drastically changes its optical properties. The switching changes the reflected light due to the interaction with the optical resonator below the Pd/Mg film. The optical resonator consists of two oxide layers with a metal layer sandwiched in-between. The latter provides lateral conductivity, which enables the integration of the complete stack as a front contact for a solar cell. In this work, the concept of a functionalized front contact with switchable colour will be demonstrated by optical simulations as well as optical and electrical measurements of the solar cell.
