While for decades language production and comprehension were typically studied individually, in more recent years researchers have begun to investigate production and comprehension in concert, considering that in everyday life producing and comprehending speech are tightly intertwined. Here we first detail theories of word production and comprehension, and then describe the current theoretical advances which account for both processes. We follow this with presenting the state-of- the-art research determining to what extent processes and representations between production and comprehension overlap, across every stage necessary to produce a word, and we discuss the state of representations in research investigating language in conversation and social situations. |
