Popis: Plants utilising the C4 pathway of CO2 fixation appear to exhibit much lower photorespiratory activity than their C3 counterparts (Badger, Canvin, 1981). Previous work in this laboratory with 6 species of C4 monocots (Furbank, Badger, 1982) indicates that whole leaves in the light consume only 0.2 to 1 nmol O2 cm−2s−1 at the CO2 compensation point. In contrast, C3 plants may consume up to 10 times as much O2 at the compensation point (Badger, Canvin 1981).
