Comparative Effectiveness of Fast Neutrons and Gamma Rays in Producing Sterility in House Flies1

Popis: When both sexes of Musca domestica L. were exposed as 3-day-old pupae to fast neutrons or gamma rays, oviposition was completely inhibited by 200 rad of neutrons and by 1500 R of gamma rays. Also, when both sexes were treated, 100 rad of neutrons and 1000 R of gamma rays caused better than 90% sterility, though only 60–68%; sterility occurred when only males were irradiated. Complete sterility in males was produced by 300 rad of neutrons and by 2000 R of gamma rays. Thus, fast neutrons are 6.7–10 times as effective as gamma rays in producing sterility in house flies.
