Pervaporation (PV) membranes are prepared from inorganic materials such as metal, metal oxides, zeolite, silica, or ceramic materials such as gamma (γ) alumina, titania, or zirconia by sol–gel technique. These membranes are also prepared from “organic” polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose acetate, several blends of homopolymers and copolymers by solution casting method. In recent years extensive research works are going on for developing nanosized metal and metal oxides having good compatibility with the polymer matrix. A small amount of silver, iron, or gold nanometals and nanometal oxides of aluminum, titanium, zinc, or magnesium significantly enhance the separation potential and mechanical stability of the polymer–metal nanocomposite (PMNC) membranes prepared by integrating several functional polymers with these nanomaterials. In this chapter, the recent works on synthesis, characterization, and application of these metal/metal oxide-based PMNC membranes for separation of organic–water and organic–organic mixtures by PV have been discussed. |
