Popis: | Preoperative (PO) thyroid (T) scintigraphy (S) in 924 case histories of thyroid carcinoma (TC) was evaluated in a former goiter-endemic Pre-Alpine region. From 1971–1996, POTS was omitted in 178 (22.2%) of 802 TC. There were 92 papillary, 58 follicular, 11 oncocytic, 6 anaplastic, 4 medullary TC and 7 other C. Incomplete diagnosis of T disease by omission of POTS prior to surgery has immediate and delayed consequences. POTS prevents unnecessary surgery. It is an epidemiologic monitoring tool of hyperthyroidism (HT). It therapeutically and functionally influences the extent of T resection, thereby preventing late HT. Moreover, POTS prognostically influences the total activity of therapeutic 131-1 on the ALARA basis (as low as reasonably achievable). |
