Agricultural use of sewage sludge emerges as an economic and convenient disposal practice for many aspects (reduced technological treatment cycle, resource recycling, etc.) but can induce remarkable environmental problems, yet widely documented, involving soil and water (surface and groundwater) pollution, negative effects on crops and animals, and on human health. To evaluate the environmental impact, and thus the feasibility of such disposal system, a scheme is proposed, based on the use of matrices, which can provide general, preliminary indications on the major problems arising from the different situations, from the environmental and economic point of view, and on the relative tools to minimize the environmental impact. Such scheme will then have to be integrated by specific matrices, calibrated according to the local situation. |
