Popis: | The methodology for evaluating the mitogenic effect of Zn2+ on human PBL was standardized in a microtiter system. In normal subjects the maximal PBL transformation response occurred in 6–7 day cultures at a Zn2+ concentration of 0.1–0.5 mM. Utilizing PHA as a reference cell activator, the in vitro PBL response to Zn2+ was evaluated in a heterogeneous population of patients with adenocarcinoma of the breast, epidermoid carcinoma of the head and neck, and lymphoma. In all cases the PBL responses to Zn2+ were depressed in a fashion similar to PHA. Zn2+ appears to be a sensitive activator of PBL and may prove of value in the in vitro immunologic evaluation of patients with cancer. |
