Popis: | SummaryThe mode of action of the hypoglycaemic sulfa drugs and related compounds is discussed. Several theories have been advocated :1° Stimulation of the B-cells of the Langerhan’s islets which secrete insulin;2° Inhibition of release of glucagone by the α-cells;3° Inhibition of liver insulinase which destroys insulin;4° Change in some enzymatic reaction in carbohydrate metabolism. In human pathology the hypoglycaemic sulfa drugs improve diabetes mellitus in patients over fifty. In our personal experience, the drug was well tolerated in 28 cases out of 30. Duration of the disease, duration of insulin treatment and amount of insulin required do not seem to significantly influence the result. |
