Popis: | The launch of The Magnet Theatre 'Migration' Plays in 2012 coincided with the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the company, founded by Mark Fleishman and Jennie Reznek in 1987. Magnet Theatre has achieved substantial recognition both here and abroad for producing original work that engages in a compelling and innovative way with the South African present and past; as Fleishman explains in his introduction, the company 'is committed to engaging with and reflecting the landscape of South Africa in its transition to democracy. At the same time we are driven by a spirit of research and investigation' (p. 6). In terms of performance practice, the company has developed a distinctive aesthetic signature to embody contested histories and spaces. These histories and spaces range from the legacy of slavery (embedded in sites throughout the Mother City), to the forgotten rural communities in the Northern Cape, or to those travelling the N2 between the Eastern Cape and Cape Town. |
