Popis: In this chapter, Borwein analyses the strains of Southern Gothic through the translocation of style from regional to global and popular to romantic sub-variants. Such an examination of aesthetics extends to textual analysis of pieces from diverse locales, which are symptomatic of the complexities of adapting narrative styles across geographical and generic boundaries. Illustrative texts that exhibit Southern gothic mutations span from regions like Australia and Britain to America. Borwein’s analysis highlights the importance of metaphor in the translation of Southern gothic style in transnational forms. In doing so, a significant distinction is delineated between atmospheres of Southern gothic tales, and texts that merely mimic genre tropes. Thus, Borwein distinguishes between the fluidity of the global South, and the concrete style of regional forms of the South through metaphor.
