At present 2.3 million tons of grapes are produced annually from 280 thousand hectares of grapevines in Iran. Grape production is projected to increase to 5.6 million tons per year by the end of the third development plan. This increase will not be possible without appropriate management practices, particularly with respect to micronutrient supply in the context of a balanced fertiliser program. An investigation was carried out in 1998 at 2 places (Esmail Abad and Sultan Abad of Qazvin province, central Iran) to find the simplest way to increase yield of grapes (Vitis vinifera; variety Thompson seedless; syn Sultana). The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized block design with five treatments and three replications. The results showed that the grape yield in the control treatment was 4.55 t ha−1 in Esmail Abad and 4.94 t ha−1 in Sultan Abad, while it was 7.73 t ha−1 in the foliar application treatment in Esmail Abad and 19.20 t ha−1 in foliar plus soil application treatment in Sultan Abad. A comparison of the different methods showed that the foliar plus soil application treatment showed the best results. However, foliar application of K, Mg and micronutrients were the fastest and the most economical way to increase grape yield. |
