Tourette disorder and other persistent tic disorders (collectively referred to as TD) are relatively common neuropsychiatric conditions, which are associated with significant functional impairment. Although traditional treatment approaches are effective for reducing tic symptom severity, they often do not address accompanying avoidant and accommodating behaviors that are associated with decreases in adaptive functioning and quality of life (QOL). Evidence suggests that psychosocial treatment approaches that incorporate principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) with an emphasis on QOL have the potential for reducing avoidance and accommodation among youth with TD. This combined approach of ABA with an emphasis on QOL is referred to as positive behavior support (PBS). This chapter presents a PBS process for: (1) identifying problematic, avoidant, and accommodating behaviors; (2) confirming avoidance functions and identifying the context in which these behaviors occur; and (3) developing interventions that foster positive behavior changes and lasting improvements in QOL. |
