Popis: This chapter begins with a summary of how teachers manage break-times in New Zealand schools and considers what research has suggested about adults in the playground. It summarises the challenges and opportunities for students, school staff and parents as they balance the need for a break-time that includes physical exercise, fresh air, socialisation, safety and freedom to play without imposed limitations. The roles and responsibilities of teachers on duty in New Zealand schools are formulated by each school’s principal, Board of Trustees and wider community. The playground provides a valuable context for students to experience and learn to resolve conflicts independent of adult direction. The children were then reprimanded for the simple and natural action of picking up the stick and are experiencing supervised risk-taking. Most children with disabilities, medical conditions and other special needs have Education and/or Medical Care Plans at school.
