A short review of important methods for the chemical synthesis of nanoscale particles is presented: transition metal ion reduction by sodium borohydride in aqueous and nonaqueous solvents, nonaqueous reduction using alkali metals, precipitation of metal ions by hydroxide ion, aerogel synthesis, reverse micelle techniques, gas phase aerosol methods, and metal vapor deposition. Nucleation in cold matrices is discussed. Emphasis is placed on chemical reaction stoichiometries, reaction conditions, and isolation techniques. The uses of nanophase materials as novel chemical reagents is considered along with their unusual physical properties. |
