The uncontrolled growth of cells is characteristic of a group of diseases known as cancer. The major difficulty in coping with this problem is that there is, as yet, little information of particular significance on the biochemical differences between normal and malignant tissues. Out of necessity, the chemotherapeutic approach to oncology has been rather empirical with the major successes being noted with drugs which are generally more toxic to rapidly proliferating cells. Most of these cytotoxic anticancer agents act primarily as inhibitors of nucleic acid synthesis at various sites and by different mechanisms. |
