Popis: Asaro–Tiller–Grinfeld (ATG) instabilities are elastic stress driven instabilities. This chapter begins with a detailed description of two approaches that are used to understand ATG instabilities, namely, the variational and perturbative analyses. These theoretical descriptions are followed by the description of phase field modelling to study the morphological evolution in thin films and their assemblies in 2- and 3-D. This section on the modelling studies shows how continuum models such as phase field models and their numerical implementation help in relaxing some of the restrictive assumptions and approximations made in the variational and perturbative analyses. The chapter ends with a summary and an indication of some promising avenues of exploration.
