This chapter explores the natural bioactive compounds found in microalgae and also explores the protective efficacy of these compounds against UV radiation. Microalgae make up the largest and most diverse group of photosynthetic organisms. Bioactive compounds from microalgae are a promising source of natural products that have wide applications in the cosmeceuticals and pharmaceutical industries. Nannochloropsis gaditana extract exhibits significant in vitro skin protection activity against induced oxidative stress and provides new insights into the beneficial role of microalgal bioactive compounds in cosmetic formulations which can protect skin from oxidative stress. Carotenoids are generally used for their pigment properties by the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries because of their nutraceutical activity. Sporopollenin is a safe, natural, nontoxic compound that can absorb UV-B radiation and bind with heavy metals. It has been reported in some algal species. The protein-based film-forming hydrolyzed collagen associated with ultraviolet-A, ultraviolet-B and/or inorganic filters protect against chronological skin ageing. |
