Popis: The Elements of Style by Strunk and White has been an elegant, yet compact guide to good writing for many generations of students. This paper offers rules of thumb for next generation serials interface design, based on common mistakes made since the earliest days of electronic interfaces until today. The focus is on acquisitions-related interfaces: ordering, invoicing, and claiming. Topics include making the decision to develop a new interface, determining functional and technical specifications, coordinating and communicating with other parties, determining the data transfer mechanism, testing, implementing, and iterative enhancements. Common mistakes in interface design and their underlying causes are explored. These causes include issues relating to lack of shared technical terminology, development resource constraints, shifting standards, and competitive barriers to interoperability. Several rules of thumb governing the design of the next generation of serials interfaces are offered as a guide to EDI style based on Strunk and White's The Elements of Style.
