It is widely recognized that the relationship between sleep and medical disorders is bidirectional, i.e., sleep quality is affected by medical disorders and by medications and vice versa. However, this pattern, which is evident in most diseases, including respiratory disorders, was not appreciated or acknowledged until the past several decades. This chapter outlines the evolution of our current understanding of how sleep, or lack thereof, and circadian rhythms affect both physiologic and pathologic respiratory processes. |
