Popis: | When incremental loading tests are used to determine the strength of glass, preexisting flaws can grow subcritically during the loading history prior to the stress level, causing failure. Calculations have been performed using linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) to predict the effect of the step size on the strength value obtained in such an incremental test. The theory showed step size to have a small, predictable effect on the average strength values determined by an incremental test. The results obtained permit taking this effect into consideration when utilizing such tests. Experimental verification of the theoretical approach was obtained by predicting and measuring the time-to-failure during the final load increment at which fracture occurred on actual tests. |
