Popis: Anhedonia, considered a core feature of schizophrenia, has traditionally been defined as a diminished capacity to experience pleasure. However, anhedonia may more accurately reflect a behavioral deficit characterized by reductions in the frequency of pleasurable activities. Theoretical accounts of this behavioral abnormality suggest it results from abnormalities in reward processing. This chapter proposes that anhedonia results from dysfunctional negative emotion processes. Specifically, we propose that abnormalities in negative emotion reactivity and regulation result in pervasive chronic elevations in negative emotion. Abnormalities in emotional reactivity, or affective “coactivations,” lower the net hedonic value of any potentially rewarding stimulus and result in weakened persistence of positive emotional experiences over time. Impairments in emotion regulation may contribute to increased negative emotion reactivity and coactivation, as well as reductions in the frequency of pleasurable activities. We also discuss mechanisms underlying emotion regulation failures and propose a novel negative emotion conceptual model of anhedonia.
