Popis: We experienced a case of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (PFD) involving the left 2nd-4th ribs in a 34-year-old man. In this case, the disease was detected by an abnormal shadow on a plane X-ray film and left back pain. Rib is known as one of the predilection place, but PFD of the rib is rare, whereas monostotic fibrous dysplasia of the rib is common. Only 12 cases including this case have been reported in Japan. Fibrous dysplasia is a benign bone disease, but presents difficulty in differential diagnosis by plane rentgenogram and tomography and sometimes necessitates to differentiate from malignant diseases. Some malignant changes have been reported. Therefore extirpation of the tumor and histological diagnosis are mandatory. Upon operation the tumor should be carefully extirpated with the surrounding tissues as widely as possible for a fear of recidivation. In this case, we extirpated the focus with the surrounding tissue and the patient is enjoying good health without any complications.
