Popis: Collagen derived biomaterials have been used in medicine for ages. Intact, native collagen fibrils can be prepared in high purity from bovine tendons by pepsin treatment. Formulation of foils and sponges by freeze-drying is an accepted procedure. In the body, collagen is resorbed by an active cellular mechanism. Porous collagen sponges serve as carriers for the fibrin adhesive system. In Germany, these materials are used to control bleeding in parenchymatic organs. A gentamicin-collagen compound is clinically used in bone and soft tissue infections.
