MCs in specialized cells become age and then undergo destruction by proteases or (sometimes) being digested by lysosomes during mitophagy [1, 2]. If the activity of proteases and lysosomes is insufficient, then MCs can degrade into granules of lipofuscin (LF). Lipofuscin – from Greek. lipos – fat and lat. Fuscus – dark, brown. The term is very unfortunate, because it turned out that common lipids in many lipofuscin granules are not detected at all. In addition, the term is perceived as a kind of individual substance, although in fact lipofuscin trash can be completely different. |
