Popis: SummaryAnatomo-clinical study of four cases of Simmonds disease observed during the last years, at St Pierre Hospital, Brussels; among them were three females and one male.Discussion of the pathological and clinical features of the disease.The principal lesion of this disease is the destruction of the anterior pituitary lobe, caused by a specific or non specific inflammation, or by a solid or cystic tumor. Howewer, though this was not the case with the actual patients, it seems that pituitary atrophy of women is usually caused by a post-partum thrombotic necrosis.The destruction of the anterior pituitary is followed by a secondary hypoplasia of gonads, thyroid and adrenal cortex similar to atrophy observed on animals after hypophysectomy.Notwithstanding the pathological identity of the lesions of endocrine organs, the clinical symptoms are, in most cases, quite variable.
