This chapter describes how aircraft flight control is achieved. It includes information on the evolution of flight control actuation and how hydraulic systems operating at up to 5000 psi were required to move flight control surfaces due to the aerodynamic loads that arose as aircraft size and speed increased. This chapter also described the high-lift systems (flaps and slats) that have been used to increase lift during both takeoff and landing. These high-lift systems became a necessity as aircraft and wing designs were optimized for the cruise phase of commercial flight. |
