| Popis: | Recently, as many as 50,000 migrant children from Central America have entered the United States without their parents. Under federal law, public schools must enroll a child who lives in the community, regardless of his or her immigration status. Ming and her twin brother Chang enrolled in my district’s elementary school. Ming would not speak, eat, or go to the bathroom at school. Chang told us that she talked at home. Her teachers and I became concerned about why she was withdrawn, while Chang was outgoing and happily engaged in school activities. He wore new clothes while she came to school in baggy red pants every day. We suspected she was neglected at home. Ming would not speak, and her parents could not speak. They spoke Fujianese, and translators for this indigenous language were difficult to find and were expensive.
