Popis: Contemporary writers praised the fertility of the hills either side of the valley of the River Mole, which became a major centre for hops. Large numbers of buildings in central Farnham were once used for hop drying and storage. The town became prosperous on farming and brewing. Much of the built-up area of modern Farnham was once hop grounds. Grand groups of kilns with louvred vents rather than cowls were built on farms, across the chalk downs. This hard chalk called clunch was a distinctive building material. Some farms experimented with double drying floors, but they do not survive. Most kilns have been converted to housing or shops.
