This chapter explores the digital and optical technology behind high-resolution magnification endoscopy. Indications for utilizing this type of imaging in the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, and colon are reviewed. Focus is then shifted to analyzing comparative studies of high-resolution magnification endoscopy and standard definition endoscopy with or without the use of concurrent contrast enhancement techniques. In particular, the identification of pathologic and specifically malignant mucosal patterns is assessed. HD magnification endoscopy is consistently found to allow for superior visualization of subtle mucosal changes, thus decreasing the rate of missed diagnoses and allowing for targeted biopsies. |
