Popis: Area control error (ACE) is a quantity used by balancing authorities to perform frequency regulation in bulk power systems. Recently, increased variations in ACE were seen in second-to-second timescale as a result of rising volatile power generation such as wind. Therefore, new entities and control methods that could regulate ACE in fast timescales with minimal errors are becoming popular. To analyze their impact on power system operation and planning, an ACE simulation model is necessary. Hence, this paper develops a time series modeling methodology based on autoregressive moving average (ARMA) that can be used for simulating ACE based on historical values. The model is constructed and tested using one-minute ACE measurement data from PJM. The results show that ARMA model can be used for simulating ACE.
