Popis: | Ethical dilemmas can arise when formulating a discharge plan for a child from a medically complex hospitalization. Four principal stakeholders are involved in the discharge plan: the patient, the family, the medical caregivers, and the hospital. Since pediatric patients are considered to be a “vulnerable” population, they require special protection from the potential risks associated with an imprudent discharge plan. Balancing the ethical principles of parental autonomy, the child’s right to self-determination, beneficence, the child’s best interest, and the appropriate use of limited resources can impede the expediency with which a discharge plan is executed. In this article, through the use of illustrative cases, we discuss some of the more common ethical issues encountered in pediatric discharge planning. We provide an ethical analysis of these issues as well as recommendations for their potential resolution. |
