Faced with increasing smallholder agriculture operations, and the vulnerability of the agriculture system from natural disasters, there is a growing recognition of the importance to invest in agriculture for reducing poverty, inequality and hunger, and for building a sustainable development strategy (FAO 2012). The problem in India assumes a more serious concern with almost 50 million hectares of its land in the flood-prone areas (Government of India 2012). It is important that with a better understanding of conditions one can increase smallholder productivity, income and ensure that livelihood-oriented agriculture, and livelihood-oriented food systems are sustainable. Sustainable Development Goals in South Asia can be achieved through agricultural reforms and structuring an agrarian system which is resilient to natural disasters. |
